A good progression system keeps players engaged for the long haul. Too fast, and players hit the ceiling. Too slow, and they get frustrated. Here's how we designed our three-path progression system to balance these challenges.
The Three Paths to Power
At Raudra Cosmos, we don't believe in one-dimensional progression. Instead, we've created three distinct advancement systems that work together:
- Level Up: Steady, predictable growth through XP
- Advance: Tier-based unlocking using Authority Fragments
- Ascend: Transformative power through duplicate cards
The Key Insight: Each path serves a different purpose - Level Up is reliable, Advance is strategic, and Ascend transforms your collection.
Level Up: The Foundation
Leveling up is the most straightforward path to power. Earn XP from battles, quests, and activities, then gain levels. But we added depth through:
- Scaling XP costs that increase gradually
- Meaningful stat gains at every level
- Skill unlocks at milestone levels
- Max level of 200 for long-term goals
The max level of 200 gives us plenty of room to work with, and the scaling formula ensures that each level feels meaningful without being overwhelming. Early levels fly by, while later levels become more meaningful achievements.
Advance: Unlocking Potential
Our Advance system (what many games call "rank up" or "promote") uses a dedicated currency called Authority Fragments. Players earn these through various game modes, and they're precious - using them wisely is key to success.
Nine Tiers of Power
Each Advance tier unlocks new power levels and gives significant stat bonuses. It's not just about bigger numbers - each tier unlocks:
- New passive abilities: Each tier reveals more of a deity's potential
- Stat multipliers: Significant boosts to core stats
- Skill enhancements: Abilities become more powerful or gain new effects
- Power level increases: +500 base power per tier
Ascend: The Duplicate Problem Solved
Getting duplicates in gacha games can be frustrating. "Great, another card I already have." But our Ascend system turns duplicates into power.
Each ascension rank consumes duplicate cards but gives substantial rewards:
- Damage Boost: +10%, +20%, +30%, +40% at ranks 1, 3, 5, 7
- Skill Unlocks: Enhanced skills at even ranks (2, 4, 6)
- Power Level: +500 per rank
The Satisfaction Loop: Every pull is valuable, even if it's a deity you already own. This changes the psychology of gacha from "disappointment on duplicate" to "progress toward ascension."
Balancing Three Systems
The challenge is making all three progression paths matter simultaneously:
- Level Up is steady and predictable - always available, always rewarding
- Advance gives big jumps but requires dedicated resources - strategic choices
- Ascend transforms your units but needs luck (or time) - collection bonus
Together, they create a progression web where players always have something meaningful to work toward. If you're out of Authority Fragments to Advance, you can still Level Up through gameplay. If you pull a duplicate, you can Ascend for power.
Player Impact
What does progression feel like at different stages?
Early Game
Levels come quickly, unlocking new abilities and giving immediate feedback. The first Advance to Rank 1 feels significant, and players see clear paths forward.
Mid Game
Players must choose where to invest scarce Authority Fragments. Ascension starts becoming a goal, and the collection aspect takes on new meaning.
End Game
Maxing level 200, reaching Rank 9, and Ascending to rank 7 becomes the ultimate achievement. But even then, there's always another deity to build.
What's Coming
We're exploring additional progression paths including:
- Equipment enhancement synergies with progression
- Rune customization that complements these systems
- Potential future systems we can't talk about yet
The goal is always the same: keep players engaged, give meaningful choices, and ensure that time invested translates to power gained.
